Review: Riverdale Season 2 Episode 7 “Chapter Twenty: Tales From The Darkside”

The effectiveness of the deliberate framing and structure of this episode will rely heavily upon the viewers’ understanding and knowledge of classical horror text. The references made throughout the episode are distinctive, an entertaining hold on the audience’s thrill and nostalgia, elevated by exemplary direction and cinematography. The extent of the entertainment and viewer’s belief of purpose however, is totally linked to their ability to recognise these references. And that may be extremely off-putting. Throughout the differing segments, the audience is teased and tempted by situations, objects and roles that we assume knowledge upon. Whether it be the dead deer, the role of the Sheriff or the Janitor, our preconceived notions of the genre is tested. While Josie’s story feels the most isolated and individual of the three, focussing more on her sins than the Black Hood’s role in general, all three stories are intriguing in their own manner. 8.3/10
