Review: Designated Survivor Season 2 Episode 7 “Family Ties”

A rather standard, unexciting entry for ‘Designated Survivor’ as it follows a typical, tried and formulaic episodic narrative. While the array of international, domestic and personal issues Kirkman faces here contributes to mounting pressure on the President, there isn’t enough breathing time for the show to fully explore the implications on the character. Instead, he simply gets on with the job. It’s totally within character and luckily this episode doesn’t force any moral monologues on the audience, but the episode also lacks a defining moment while the serial narrative remains dull and uninvolving. It was great thought to see Kirkman back properly interacting with his family, and the unpredictable way the story with Leo played out at least meant it didn’t go down a familiar path. 6.4/10
