Review: Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 8 “Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer”

The Duffer Brothers provide exceptional direction throughout this episode, masterfully matching and fitting sequences together to sustain momentum and the horrific confrontation within the science facility. The characters all come together organically, and while Billy’s story and abuse seem awkwardly irrelevant, the heightened sense of dread is rarely displaced, as the writers continue their onslaught on the American dream and family. The dark but rich cinematography reflects a very 1980s style of horror, a period tone that is distinctly carried into the second half of the episode. While this half may lose some momentum as it touches upon clichéd sentiment over much of the cruel reality and supernatural grit the first half emphasises, the episode as a whole is still a riveting, well structured text. 9.3/10
