Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 Episode 7 “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad”

Science-fiction television shows often present these forms of sideshow stories, that capitalise upon serialised components, Mudd in this instance, that need a clear resolution. This episode’s beautiful production design and cinematic cinematography consequently attributes to the show pulling it off, elevating the episode beyond typical fair. Furthermore, despite some leaps taken with the narrative to account for the familiar set-up, several twists and turns keep the story compelling. The emphasis on Michael and her relationship with Tyler is never fully developed, but it does work thematically within the episode and give some moment for character rather than simply the fast-paced plot development. The conclusion isn’t quite as fitting, but the journey is entertaining enough to pass it over. 8.7/10
