Review: Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 2 “Chapter Two: Trick or Treat, Freak”

While the show’s sense of style remains instantly charming, with multiple pop-culture beats that feel fluid and never stay past their welcome, the atmosphere does seem to intrude on narrative progression. The Duffer Brothers have every reason to fully capitalise on the Halloween theme, but eventually it feels as if the story is stalling to accommodate such a wish, with the main gang never really getting involved in the wider mythology/mystery, and Nancy relegated heavily to the Justice For Barb story. Both Nancy and Will do contribute to a nice commentary on PTSD, which in itself is well discussed in relation to the time period, and I enjoy seeing Hopper’s relationship develop with Eleven, but I hope the show gets a move on soon towards a greater purpose. 7.8/10
