Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 Episode 3 “Context is for Kings”

Following viewing this episode of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ I checked who directed the episode and found little surprise it was Akiva Goldman, one of the most inconsistent, generic writers/directors working today. With clunky dialogue, blunt exposition and an overall predictability to events, this episode is lacklustre, borrowing heavy from other sci-fi texts and attempting to get in on the ‘anti-hero’ craze with Jason Isaac’s Captain Lorca. Isaacs is as great as ever, and Sonequa Martin-Green is also excellent, but the convoluted serial plot and cast of bumbling archetypes doesn’t give them a lot to work with. It lacks emotional depth and thematic complexity, providing very little nuance or any attempt at going beyond the genre’s borders. 6/10
