Review: Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 Episode 2 “Battle at the Binary Stars”

In its immediate follow-up to the premiere, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ attempts to forge a bond between the audience and Burnham, yet only manages to get halfway. While her flashback is vital in highlighting a clear development for the character from emotion-less to arguably eruptive, there is little else of consequence in play here in terms of character connection, and the ending is too melodramatic to create any human relation. Furthermore, while the battle sequences have clear purpose in terms of narrative mechanisms, they fall flat visually. There is little weight to the episode’s consequence that unfortunately makes it devoid of presence and any lingering effects. 6.6/10
