Review: The Defenders Season 1 Episode 6 “Ashes, Ashes”

‘Ashes, Ashes’ opens with an excellently symbolic moment that captures one of the few aspects of Alexandra’s background we understand, her age. As she grapples with mortality, Sigourney Weaver provides a stirring performance that she later continues. But that such performance is cut short by a terrible, awkward twist that reinforces that this show’s narrative is less concerned with The Defenders, and more with Daredevil and Elektra. The two could co-exist, and they should, but Elektra’s domineering over the show’s main arc and mystery, as well as Iron Fist’s relationship with the villains, means Jessica and Luke feel like supporters to Danny and Matt, rather than equals. The writing provides some nice moments of reflection and relationship building for Matt and Jessica, but Danny and Luke are left with stilted dialogue and meandering. Furthermore, the division that centres this episode lacks emotional weight or tension due to the team being so quickly established. These obvious flaws is what makes this show feel unnecessary and lacking purpose. 6.2/10
