Review: The Defenders Season 1 Episode 5 “Take Shelter”

Five episodes in, and ‘The Defenders’ is still yet to mesh, as while the team splinters apart without yet ever truly coming together, the main narrative lacks a compelling hook. For the moment at least, the Elektra and Matt dynamic dominates, yet it relies upon a generic trope of the mind-controlled girlfriend by an oriental force. It is predictable and simply boring as Elektra struts around with zero deeper purpose, something none of the other ‘autonomous’ villains have either. Furthermore, this episode does little to cement the show’s ‘event’ status, as the common, repeating locations makes the city feel very small, lessening the significance of both the Hand and the Defenders. 6/10
