Review: The Defenders Season 1 Episode 1 “The H Word”

The visual ambition the director has attempted to employ within this episode is commendable. However, instead of grounding the four protagonists within the city or creating synergy, the motifs, especially the wonky transitions between characters, are counter-productive distinguishing them too much. One may argue this purposeful, to show the distinction before they come together, but individual character beats are too slow, and feel unnecessary even as reminders of the status of the respective ‘heroes’. Jessica Jones comes off the best due to Ritter’s stellar performance and the creation of a mystery, but the other characters’ plots are too broad to inspire intrigue. The villain, while played brilliantly by Sigourney Weaver, also promotes the generic trope of seeming ambiguous and pretentious, creating interest, but not enough urgency. 6.6/10
