Review: Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 15 “A Problem of Memory”

Cramped with storylines, with many not connecting or holding the emotional weight they really should, in particular Magnus’ struggle with his past, this episode again lacks clear focus and is unable to balance serialised narrative with episodic drama. While Valentine’s overarching story continues to be somewhat interesting with a nice twist at the end with Sebastian, Simon is once again given priority for whatever reason. As a character, Simon is an annoying distraction whose story is rushed, predictable and is without any form of consequence. Clary sits out most of the main narrative this week to focus on him, diluting the overall show’s stakes and tension. While the relationship is one of the key aspects of the show, it continues to weigh the whole series down. 5.5/10
