Review: Orange Is The New Black Season 5 Episode 9 “The Tightening”

While the horror stylisation this episode employs keeps the episode interesting in brief instances, using tropes both humorously and to create suspense, it doesn’t elevate the episode as a whole. Instead, the remainder is simply meandering filler, with little getting accomplished at all despite the negotiations occurring. The flashbacks resonate with the idea of freedom and suppression of ones beliefs which matches nicely with people not believing Red, and with Suzanne and Lorna’s mentalities, but it becomes convoluted and a little silly. This episode is a mess in that respect with conflicting ideas and no strong direction to assist in portraying them. 6.6/10
