Review: War Machine

After two hours I couldn’t tell you what this film really hoped to achieve, its purpose, or its position on the plethora of war related themes it brings up. The director/writer repeatedly mishandles the material, constructing a film of uneven pace that provides focus to the minutiae and irrelevant, and skims over the far more important and narratively significant points. Brad Pitt jumps between exemplary and caricature, while the film is able to present a few emotional instances, most particularly when focussing on the protagonist and his wife. However, ultimately, this film is never arresting, nor is it even funny, instead it is a clumsy, bored, step by step examination of American ignorance and intrusion, assumptions and immersion within culture. That may sound ambitious, but really it fails to provide anything meaningful to the discussion. 2.5.5
