Review: Better Call Saul Season 3 Episode 7 “Expenses”

Our expenses in life are not limited to the monetary resources we accumulate and dreadfully give away, instead they encompass the draining, unpleasant notions of being pressed down by pressures out of ones’ control. This episode of ‘Better Call Saul’ pounces upon this idea through its stunning imagery of Jimmy below the bustle of life, collecting the scraps of those in power and in luck. However, while the character’s arc here is excellent, and Odenkirk is beyond exceptional, the writer pushes the thematic notes past Jimmy and creates a stunning connection to Mike. Both are men living in stages of their lives where they are pressured to conform to a way of living they are not used to. Just as Jimmy’s cons are suppressed by his need to please, Mike is pressured towards a more domesticated life with the intrusion of others. He wants, and needs, to be involved in greater schemes. It is a brilliant examination, one that takes an episode that only provides mild narrative progression, and again enforces the perfect character. 9.7/10
