Review: Designated Survivor Season 1 Episode 21 “Brace for Impact”

This finale was always going to have a lot to accomplish, and for the most part, while it was slightly predictable, there was enough thrill and danger to be compelling. This was especially aided by putting Hannah back in command where she belongs, and building the search for Lazarno around her efforts. Yet while the overall process of progression was finely dealt with, the result feels in contrast with the ceremony and parade shown on-screen. The end is mostly optimistic and in ease, when the stakes high and everyone shouldn’t be treating it as achievement. It certainly feels like the start of a new chapter for the show, but it also seems manufactured to push the narrative into resolution then disrupt it. The second season will need to fully develop its villains and bring the political side of the show in level with the intrigue of the conspiracy. While Kiefer Sutherland does great work with the material, he is underused and going forward the show should not forget that. 8/10
