Review: Fargo Season 3 Episode 3 “The Law of Non-Contradiction”

It is not until the end of this very unique episode that one can grasp its importance. Not only does it shake ‘Fargo’s’ formula up, but it makes Gloria’s investigation far more interesting that it previously was, not necessarily because of the connections created between Ennis, his background and other characters on the show, but because of the insight given to Gloria. While Ewan McGregor and David Thewlis have their cooky, spontaneous and largely compelling characters, Carrie Coon, who is excellent here, has Gloria, who, while definitely not stereotypical, was previously not exactly intriguing. But the metaphorical (and quite literal) comparisons made throughout this episode between her and the android not only showcase her ideals of loyalty, necessity to do what is right and finish a job, but present an enduring commentary of each person’s own journey. It is a fascinating spotlight upon the distractions we face and our questions of commitment, layered upon entry into a different world, a different planet for the robot and LA for Gloria. It may take some time to get used to the episode’s isolation, but in hindsight, it was certainly a thought-provoking experience. 9.3/10
