Review: Feud Season 1 Episode 5 “And The Winner Is… (The Oscars of 1963)”

This a magnificent piece of television that rallies behind impeccable performances and strong central themes, critiquing them with a stunning eye for detail and range. In contrasting the prestige and superficiality of the Oscars and the relationships between actors with the cut-throat behind the scenes nature of Hollywood, Ryan Murphy has perfectly provided insight into the business. This duplicity is reflected in Joan Crawford, an actress who knows the business well, jumping between her vindictive, and at times truly awful actions, and victimising her, showing her behaviour as a result of her loneliness and treatment. It’s a stunning characterisation of Hollywood that Murphy depicts and though Davis deserved greater attention, as well as her positive relationship with de Havilland, this episode gets history, and the significance of it, near-perfect. 9.7/10
