Review: Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 9 “Bound By Blood”

One of my chief complaints with ‘Shadowhunters’ has been with its balance between the serious, dangerous, threatening long-term storyline with Clary vs Valentine and the smaller individual relationships and romances. It just seems ridiculous for the characters to be waltzing around, worried about their love lives while being hunted down. This episode deals with this issue somewhat, and while it isn’t perfect, the writing integrates the relationships into the main plots. This is also the first episode in a while to feature heavy plot progression, which helps support the show’s tantalising mythology and its wider world of Vampires, Werewolves etc. These factions have appeared throughout the series but normally in an episodic manner. By truly tying them into the central conflict, in a way that will hopefully be consequential and meaningful, the writers should be able to expand the show’s appeal and make the Valentine’s threat more relevant and grandiose. The acting is still poor, especially from Katherine McNamara, and Alec continues to be sidelined (though the end does promise a more assertive, powerful side of the character), but a greater focus on plot should help the show. 7/10
