Verdict: Luke Cage Season 1 Episode 8 “Blowin’ Up the Spot”

Though Diamondback should present Luke Cage with some trouble and has an interesting history (the cliffhanger reveal was a great touch), his introduction was slightly underwhelming considering the hype created over the few episodes. While Erik LaRay Harvey does what he can to give the character some nuance, he doesn’t seem complex and unique enough to be the season’s main villain. However, this episode does benefit from some great performances from Simone Missick and Alfre Woodard whose characters are both are given the liberty to go in their own directions with some powerful writing that truly reveals the motives of each. Though Luke Cage is sidelined for the start of this episode, his action sequences in the back half are well crafted and the vulnerability he has makes them more tense. 8.4/10
