Verdict: Designated Survivor Season 1 Episode 2 “The First Day”

‘Designated Survivor’ has an identity crisis, not truly knowing whether it wants to be a thriller, political drama or family drama. It can be all three, but it is going to need to gain a better grasp of the storylines of each character. At the moment there are too many being given screen time and as a result the writing is unable to consistently make each plot and character worth investing in. However, Kiefer Sutherland once again gives a great performance, balancing his character’s strength, nerves and openness, while the timeliness of the show and its ability to confront a range of discussions in an emotionally poignant manner is clear. 8.6/10
