Review: The Night Of Season 1 Episode 2 “Subtle Beast”

It is incredibly difficult to keep the audience engaged while highlighting the routine tediousness of something like the justice system, yet for multiple reasons ‘The Night Of’ succeeds, dripping in realism, the direction and writing is able to beautifully weave a story that depicts the reality of Naz’s situation while still allowing for dramatic moments that affect each character, and though this episode lacks the constant tense pacing of the premiere and at times seems a little fractured structurally, the multiple themes it touches on from racism to religion to justice and the complexity of the characters, especially Detective Box and calculated, ambiguous persona, make this an addictive journey. 9.3/10
