Review: Stranger Things Season 1 Episode 1 “Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers”

Paying homage to Spielberg and 80s cinema, Stranger Things has a beautiful sense of style, suspense and understanding of nostalgia, with a number of relatable characters and an intriguing premise with a wide range of science fiction elements, yet these tropes are too stilted and act only as glaringly obvious references to the era rather than influencing the plot or character in meaningful ways as the series feels more focussed on perfecting its tone and being respectful to the material that influenced it than in saying anything new or providing audiences with any unique compelling content. 8.3/10
